Day 9: I’m dirt, and I do care

Day nine of the  30-day Depeche Mode challenge – Your guilty pleasure Depeche Mode song

This one was a little difficult, as I tried to think of songs that the fandom would make me feel shame for liking, but the truth is, there aren’t really any! Why? ‘Cause I like some songs that are the campiest of camp, or songs that Dave wrote that people hate, and I regret nothing! I kept coming back around to the first song that came to me: “Dirt.” Technically it’s not a Depeche Mode song, it’s an Iggy Pop cover, but it’s still part of the catalogue so it counts.

But “Why?” you ask, “It’s a good track.” It is a great track – the contrast between the deep bass and high twinkle is great, and Dave delivers the vocals with the upmost conviction. However, it’s pretty much Depeche Mode pr0n*. I challenge anyone, man or woman, who’s found Dave remotely attractive to disagree. It’s gritty and it’s dirty but it’s damn sexy – pass me a fan when that intro starts! Some may say that makes me a drooling fangirl, which is generally considered “uncool” or “creepy” – and would get me a warning or banned on the official forums. Thus, guilt. A guilt related to a much larger societal problem that I won’t get into in this post (but could be an interesting one later). Depeche Mode is an amazingly talented group. But Dave Gahan also happens to be smokin’ hot – let’s not lie to ourselves. There’s nothing wrong with letting some girls vent their vapors every once in a while. 😉 Doesn’t make them all creepers.

Amanda

Amanda is an enthusiastic, globe-trotting Mode fan who discovered the band in late 1998. Although she often feels like she got a late start in the Depeche Mode's career, she's survived nearly 20 years of the fandom, five new albums and multiple meetings with her love for the band intact (and stronger than ever). Amanda is a life-long creative, a classically trained graphic designer, working professionally as a User Experience Designer for one of the world's largest technology companies. When not at work or traveling for Depeche, she enjoys character illustration, comics, movies and Japanese Culture. And cats. Lots of Cats.

“Technically” the song is by The Stooges, with music written primarily by bassist Dave Alexander.
