Day 2: Before there was WIMS, there was Speak & Spell

January 18, 2012 in Fun

Day two of the  30-day Depeche Mode challenge – The first song you remember hearing: “Tora! Tora! Tora!”

Two teens spending their summer Saturdays streaming videos and swapping mp3s… what could possibly go wrong? Nothing much actually, unless you’re the RIAA, ’cause we were just some adorkable geeks. If loving music is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.

Day 1: What do a 16-year old girl, The Color Purple, and Walking in my Shoes have in common?

January 17, 2012 in Fun

First up in the 30-day Depeche Mode challenge, my all-time favorite Depeche Mode song: “Walking in my Shoes”

I’m not sure when I first heard this song, but my earliest memories of it are associated with the late summer of 1999. The Singles 86–98 was my first Depeche Mode “album” and was what really was my gateway drug (in addition to a smattering of Speak and Spell tracks and Violator B-sides; oh, Napster..).

30-day Depeche Mode Challenge

January 17, 2012 in Fun

30-day challenge is a popular meme on microblogging site Tumblr and other blogs, and it occasionally pops up on other social media sites. A motivated fan created a 30-day Depeche Mode Song Challenge on Facebook a few months ago. The point is an exercise in discipline – can I post once a day for 30 days? I didn’t have a chance to participate during the holidays, but I’ve revised the Facebook challenge to better suit the blog format (and fix typos and awkward grammar). In this version, not all days will be song-related, but several will. Feel free to cut and paste and submit your own answers, either in your own blog/tumblog or as comments! See after the jump for each day’s challenge – my day one will be posted in a separate post.

Goodbye 2011, hello 2012!

January 16, 2012 in Featured, News

When the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2012, I bid 2011 a not so fond farewell. 2012 is already proving to be an exciting year for DM fans, as more rumors and delectable bits of information start to leak out. What do we have to look forward to?

VCMG – Martin and Vince’s minimal techno collaboration is off to a great start, with the first single “Spock” out last month, and the next single “Single Blip” on its way. The 10-track album Ssss will be out March 12. Check out the full press release.

Dave’s Been Busy – In a radio interview last summer, Dave mentioned he was writing songs with Kap10Kurt for a new Depeche Mode record, and also writing songs with Rich Machin of Soulsavers for what would most likely be a solo record. News on the latter projects has been silent since, but a fan who recently ran into Dave in NYC said Dave mentioned a solo project for the spring of this year (unconfirmed). This is interesting because…

A new Depeche Mode album is on the horizon! With some 20 demos in-hand, the band met last week in Santa Barbara to discuss the new album. Fletch has been saying in interviews that they will be in the studio in March, and there are rumors of the gears for tour logistics starting to turn. Estimates for the tour timeframe are looking like 2013, with rumors of the tour announcement in the fall of 2012. No producer has been announced, but furious speculation (wishing) is well underway on fan forums. Remember, this info is NOT hard confirmed – this is what is whispering in the winds from various sources. Nothing is final until official news goes up on DepecheMode.com, Depeche-Mode.com or other professional media outlets. For the latest breadcrumbs, make sure you’re subscribed to their news feeds, this blog, and reading the forums. I’ll be sure to update with what I learn (and can legally share)!

The Show at Halloween Night

October 30, 2011 in Tracklists

Depeche Mode on stage, with Jack-o-lanterns on the video screens.

Trick or treat?

Halloween is my favorite holiday, and I always thought seeing Depeche Mode live on that day would be the coolest Halloween party, ever. Double the reason to dress up, plus the best music in the world? Yes, please! A DM show has coincided with the holiday just a few times in their career, but what if DM were playing a special set just for the freaks and geeks come out to play? What would the grittiest, creepiest DM set sound like? If I had my way, it’d go something like this…

Review: “So Cruel” as recorded by Depeche Mode

October 25, 2011 in Featured, Reviews

Depeche Mode and U2, Original photographs by Anton Corbijn

Depeche Mode and U2, Original photographs by Anton Corbijn

Sometimes perceived as unlikely rivals by each camp of fans, Depeche Mode and U2 have defied music critics and changed the course of alternative music for over 30 years. Sharing producers, collaborators and signature photographers over the period, it was only a question of time before their streams crossed. Thankfully, the result included on Q Magazine‘s AHK-toong BAY-bi Covered CD is  far from a catastrophe.
