Depeche Mode demo tape, cir. 1980 (by Anton Corbijn)
Depeche Mode demo tape, cir. 1980

YouTube user Pimpf101sk has uploaded full-length versions of the demo tracks that leaked two weeks ago. I listened to “Ice Machine” last night and was just blown away.. the quality of these clips is fantastic, too. The original 31-year-old tape must have been very well cared for. You can’t miss out on hearing these, folks! Videos after the jump.

Amanda is an enthusiastic, globe-trotting Mode fan who discovered the band in late 1998. Although she often feels like she got a late start in the Depeche Mode's career, she's survived nearly 20 years of the fandom, five new albums and multiple meetings with her love for the band intact (and stronger than ever). Amanda is a life-long creative, a classically trained graphic designer, working professionally as a User Experience Designer for one of the world's largest technology companies. When not at work or traveling for Depeche, she enjoys character illustration, comics, movies and Japanese Culture. And cats. Lots of Cats.

Hi there fellow DM Fan! Very cool page indeed! I love the design! As a big DM fan as yourself, these demos sound so fake…let alone the crisp sound of these recordings. That cannot be Dave’s voice. I’m an avid collector and have been for many years. Anyway just wanted to share the love…..now to continue the rest of the blogs. Take care!

Hi there! Thanks for the feedback.. I’m glad you like the page! 🙂

These have been confirmed as real demos by members of Depeche Mode (my source works with the band). Vince seemed confused on Twitter, but the current members of the band confirmed it was real. If I remember correctly, the source tapes themselves came from someone very close to the band, with a long history. I don’t know who specifically though. The discrepancy you may be hearing in Dave’s voice is a little distortion because they were playing slightly too fast in speed. I thought these files had been reuploaded (same links) sometime after posting, but maybe those were different links.

If I’m not mistaken this tape surfaced a year to a year and a half ago. It’s in good condition for a 30 year old cassette and it’s the real thing. I can’t remember everyone who vouched for it but band members were included. It sounds a little funny but that is very early Depeche Mode with 17 year old Dave Gahan singing. They didn’t sound that way for long. Also, the contact on the tape is Mr. V.J. Martin. That’s Vince Clarke. Clarke, by the way, isn’t really his name. It’s Martin unless he’s legally changed it. So anyone who is into that sort of thing now has Vince Clarke’s phone number from 1980.
